Professional Cleaner versus DIY

Professional Cleaner versus DIY

Professional Cleaner versus DIY

Pressure washers of all strengths are pretty easy to rent or buy, today. You can even obtain a commercial-grade one at any of the big-box home improvement stores if you've got a couple thousand dollars to invest.

The big difference is the training and experience a professional pressure washing service brings to your home or business. We don't have to waste time learning how to use our equipment or experimenting to see which techniques work best for all the different surfaces and stains.

Because of our expertise, we also have a lower incident of property damage and injury. Even low-psi (pounds per square inch) residential pressure washers can cut to the bone, put out eyes, and mutilate siding, plants, and other delicate items around your home.

Black Stains on the Roof

Those black stains are colonies of gloeocapsa magma algae. They don't harm human or animal life, but they'll ruin your roof if left for too long. They feed on the limestone in your asphalt shingles. In time, they'll wear off the shingles' UV granules that protect your home from fire and severe weather. The algae also absorb heat, which, combined with the granule loss, drives up utility bills.

Worst case scenario, the algae can start to lift the shingles, allowing in moisture and causing mold growth throughout your interior structures. Mold infestations can cause asthma and Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS), which is incurable and, alongside its many debilitating effects, may cause brain damage or death.

So, yes, you should get those algae removed from your roof.

How Often to Clean My Exterior

We recommend professional roof cleaning every 3-5 years. Even if you don't have visible black stains, the algae are silently growing, and by the time you can see them, they're already causing damage.

We recommend having other exterior surfaces, such as siding, decks, and concrete areas like driveways, sidewalks, and foundations deep-cleaned at least once a year.
